Welcome to my Steve Jobs era, reader. I'm Diamond Naga Siu, and moving is tough. I'm surviving off a mattress on the floor, no chairs, and just my thoughts about tech. My latest rumination has been about ChatGPT and whether it'll take over the newsletter (editors: pls don't get any ideas!). FWIW, I don't think the chatbot could make as many jokes or song references. But I was definitely concerned that journalism was included on this list of jobs ChatGPT will likely replace. Yet, the list failed to consider how people ultimately fuel AI. Paris Marx reports how the AI boom is only possible due to troves of human workers. (I previously wrote about how the people operating a chatbot unionized — it includes details of their jobs and the struggles they face). Let's dive into that — and more — for today's tech. — Diamond Naga Siu |

1. Here's why AI robots won't get rid of jobs. Sure, the robots might automate certain roles. But they're not taking every job. Instead, they're changing the type of work and roles we do, Paris Marx writes for Insider. Machines will likely replace around 85 million jobs by 2025. But around 97 million new jobs will be created to support the machines, according to a study from the World Economic Forum. This underscores how chatbots and robots don't eradicate the need for human work. They simply keep humans — and the labor they do — out of sight and out of mind. This is great for companies but horrible for the people who are operating the chatbots. A few models already exist. Some pay less than $2 per hour to workers in countries with lower costs of labor. And chatbot operators have sounded the alarm on how taxing this work can be. Get your first look at the future of work. |
