Tech: The future belongs to ChatGPT

Plus: Leaked Amazon audio, and Twitter's finances.

Maybe it's because of the weather — it usually doesn't rain in Southern California, much like Arizona. So perhaps I could ask ChatGPT why San Diego's weather has been so bleak (and potentially even snowy) since I moved here. But that's not a productive query for the chatbot (here's everything you need to know about ChatGPT, BTW). Testing out the technology is one thing, but constructively using it as a skill is another. Tyler Le/Insider   1. ChatGPT will become a vital skill to get ahead. Maybe not ChatGPT itself, specifically. But industry leaders, university professors, and other experts all believe being able to use generative AI like ChatGPT will become an essential skill going forward.   Many schools are having a knee-jerk reaction to ChatGPT. Some of the largest districts in the US have banned it, and many educators are paranoid about students using it. Yet some educators on the other end of the spectrum are encouraging its use.   Bill Gates falls in the pro-AI category. And so do some professors at top schools like Columbia Business School. They told Insider how students currently have a distinct opportunity to get ahead with this emerging skill.   My teammate Emilia David breaks down the potential of ChatGPT in education. It seems like an obvious step when there isn't enough housing and there are abundant empty offices. But big landlords are resisting the shift. Here's how they're obstructing the change. 3. Leaked Amazon audio reveals plans for faster deliveries soon. Retail CEO Doug Herrington said during a company all-hands that Amazon plans to "deliver products to customers faster than we ever have." Get his full delivery manifesto here. 4. Twitter legal battles could strain its finances. Elon Musk is facing new legal battles after ex-Twitter employees were unhappy with their severance packages. An attorney told Insider that she's already filed 1,300 individual cases against the company. More on the $130 million problem here 5. A cool $180,000 could get you into outer space. Iwaya Giken, a Japanese startup, unveiled its helium-based space-viewing balloon this week. The CEO was inspired by "Back to the Future." Check out the commercial space travel bubble here.  6. Popular AI chatbot bans NSFW content, and users are "heartbroken." One user told Insider that the change sent him into a "sharp depression." A Reddit forum of Replika users pinned a document titled "Resources If You're Struggling." More on the change here. 7. BIPOC influencers revealed their fave brands to work with. More than a dozen influencers of color told Insider about their favorite brand partnerships, including Adobe and Starbucks. They shared their experiences with the companies and why others should work with them too. See what they said here. 8. Riding first-class in a high-speed train beats flying. Chris Libreros wanted to travel, so he worked on a cruise ship for eight months. He visited Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand, but said the experience wasn't worth the low pay and relentless schedule. THE LATEST PEOPLE MOVES IN TECH  Uber, Wayfair, & more Uber cut employees as it implements a "more rigorous approach" to performance reviews. The ad industry has been plagued with layoffs recently. Insider has been tracking all the companies that have made cuts. Retail has also slashed many jobs this year. Wayfair, Walmart, and Amazon are among the major retailers that have cut people so far this year. Check them all out here.
